Silver Single Electric Caravan Step
Getting in and out of the van should be the easy part of the trip. This Silver Single Electric Caravan Step does the work for you. The 12V motor extends the step when you open the door and pulls it back in when you close it, so there's no bending down to drag a step out by hand every time you stop. There's also a rocker switch inside if you'd rather run it in and out yourself.
The tread is silver aluminium with non-slip strips across it, set on a black frame, so it looks tidy under the van and holds grip in the wet. When you pack up, the step retracts flush against the chassis, out of the weather and out of the way for travel.
Automatic on the door, or run it yourself
Wired to the supplied door sensor, the step comes out the moment you open the door and retracts when you shut it. The included rocker switch gives you manual control as well, which is handy when you want the step to stay put while the door's open. Plenty of owners run both.
Easy on your battery
The motor is a 12V DC unit rated at 45W, so it runs off your van's system without a heavy draw. A 20A fuse protects the circuit and comes with the wiring harness. There's no separate battery pack or mains power needed.
Built to take the weight
The step is aluminium alloy construction and carries a 200kg static load, which covers adults plus whatever you're carrying through the door. At 550mm wide there's room to plant a full boot, and the single tread sits at a comfortable height for most doorways.

Fitting it
The step bolts to a flat section of chassis under the doorway, and the wiring runs into your 12V supply. Because there's a motor and door-sensor wiring to connect, we'd recommend having it fitted by an auto electrician or a caravan tech unless you're confident with 12V wiring. Getting the wiring right the first time saves a lot of mucking about later.
Single step or double?
A single step suits vans where the drop from the ground to the doorway is on the smaller side. If your van sits high and the climb is a big stretch, a two-tier step splits that height into two easier stages. Will this step fit my caravan?
It suits a lot of caravans and motorhomes, but it isn't a universal fit. You need roughly 550mm of width and a flat section of chassis under the door to bolt to, plus room for the step to swing out to its unfolded length of 547mm. Measure the space before you order.
Is it 12V?
Yes. It runs off your van's 12V DC system. The motor is rated at 45W, so it's an easy draw on the battery.
How does the electric step work?

Does it need professional installation?
It bolts up with the supplied bolts, but there's a motor and door-sensor wiring to connect. Unless you're confident with 12V wiring, we'd recommend having an auto electrician or caravan tech fit it so the wiring is right the first time.
What happens if the power fails?
This is a powered step, so it isn't meant to be pushed in and out by hand day to day. Emergency manual retraction is possible, but it isn't a simple push. As set out in the manual, the motor output shaft has to be mechanically disconnected at the fixed point first, and then the step can be pushed back and secured. It's a job for someone comfortable working on the mechanism, so the sensible approach is to keep your 12V supply in good order and check the fuse first if the step ever stops responding.
Is the tread non-slip?
Yes. The silver aluminium tread has non-slip strips across it for grip in wet weather.
