Two Vials, Two Readings

This pocket spirit level has two bubble vials set at right angles:

• Horizontal vial – sits along the top edge and shows when a surface is level
• Vertical vial – sits in the open window and shows when an edge or post is plumb (upright)

The long bottom edge has a metal strip, giving the level a straight, flat reference face to rest on.

How to Use It to Level Your Caravan

1. Pick a good reference surface

A bubble level reads the surface it sits on, so choose one that's flat and follows the line of the van. The floor inside the door, or a flat benchtop that's square to the van, usually works well. Avoid cushions, mats or anything that isn't flat.

2. Check side to side

Lay the level across the van, from one side wall towards the other. Watch where the bubble sits in the horizontal vial. If it drifts off centre, raise the low side with levelling ramps or blocks and check again.

3. Check front to back

Turn the level 90 degrees so it runs along the length of the van. Adjust the jockey wheel until the bubble is centred. If your van has a steel drawbar or chassis rail that runs true to the floor, you can also stick the level there and watch it while you wind.

4. Lower the stabilisers

Once both readings look right, wind down your stabiliser legs to steady the van. Then do a final quick check.
